Another Baby Quilt

Here is the latest baby quilt  I have made.  I digitized the birds to match the wallpaper in the nursery and embroidered some woodland appliques to go with their theme.  It is pretty simple but will go well with the white furniture and theme of the nursery.  Below is a pic of the wallpaper and a closeup of the birds I digitized.  Notice with the birds that one of them I used a satin fill but the other I used a motif fill.  I liked the difference in the texture.  I free motioned a stipple design to further add texture to the quilt but maintain its simplicity.

Two More Baby Quilts

So I have been busy traveling the last month but before I left on my trip I had 2 baby showers to attend.  I like making quilts for these events because the quilts usually are a very manageable size and I can be somewhat creative.

The first quilt is a sailboat for my expected grand nephew.  This was actually made with the rail fence pattern as depicted in the book Picture This by Billie Lauder.I have been wanting to try out the technique and since this baby will live in New England I thought the sail boat was perfect.

The theme of the nursery for the next expected baby is World Travel so what better quilt than one of the world.  The hardest part of this one was scaling an outline of the world so that it would fit the expected quilt size.  I wasn't sure how this would work out but I was thrilled with the outcome.  I appliqued the continents onto the pale blue ocean and then did some basic straight and wavy line quilting.

Now I can't wait till the new babies arrive!

Variations of Bright Hope Design

Above is a baby quilt I made from the Bright Hope Design pattern I have written about previously. In the post Two Sided Binding I have a picture of the lap quilt variation I designed from it.  Below is a baby quilt made by Maureen in a class that I taught using this pattern. I have found this pattern to be so versatile.

 

On both of these baby quilts we did a self binding.  We used the Quick Easy Mitred Binding Tool http://www.sewbizmarion.com/shop/Quilting-Tools/p/Quick-Easy-Mitered-BINDING-Tool.htm.  This is the first time I did a self binding using the backing fabric and I must say that it is worth every penny you pay for the template. The mitre is perfect every time. I used the edge joining foot to sew the front in place and it is very even.

My Latest Baby Shower Gifts

I made this Elephant baby quilt for a baby shower this past weekend.  The colors of the room are yellow and gray so I used that color combination. I used 2 different machine applique elephants and when I did the quilting I echo quilted around the elephants. On the border, my favorite part, I meandered. The gender of the baby was not known so I tried to stay with yellow, purple and green.  I used the Bright Hope baby quilt pattern from Smith Designs. 

 A few weeks ago I attended a class given by a Pfaff educator and she demonstrated how to use the Sensormatic Echo Free motion foot; I bought it that day knowing that I was going to use it for the elephants. It was really easy to use to quilt around an object.  I actually have the same foot for my Elna and did not know the technique for using it properly.

 

 

I also made some burp cloths in the same manner as my tutorial Burp Cloths shown earlier on my blog. These are made with diapers and flannel.

 

 

 

 





Sewing the last few weeks....

Well I have been busy sewing gifts for Christmas so I have not posted for awhile.  Obviously those gifts cannot be posted until after Christmas lest someone figure out what is for whom.  But I have made a few baby gifts that turned out so well.  Once again I made my favorite item, the baby bunting as posted previously the baby bunting.  Since it was for a winter baby, the inside is flannel but the outside a warmer cuddly fabric.

I made a baby quilt, Sunday Best, that has appliqued dresses, and it is a pattern that I have fallen in love with.  Who could resist this quilt?  The fabric had the characters of Beatrix Potter on it so I also made the Flopsy Bunny cloth book to go with it.

 

 

And I added a few more of my favorite items, the binky bib and some personalized burp cloths.
